It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

The rain splashing into the pond illustrates Newton’s 1st law.

Newton’s 1st law links directly to the concept of cause and effect.  (i.e.  If a car stops suddenly, then the driver will keep moving forward and if a car begins to move, then the driver will be forced to move.)

Location: Sheldon Lake.  Author: Craig Gantt.

Competing For Life

Pictures were taken during a drought at Sheldon Lake State Park.  Under normal conditions, the pond depicted in this scene supports organisms ranging from alligators to birds.  These animals depend on a stable ecosystem that includes both abiotic and biotic factors in order to survive.[...]

Change is the Only Constant

Sheldon Lake State Park is an ecosystem that supports both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Topics and concepts that can be observed in the park  include physical and chemical changes as well as food webs and natural cycles. In this scene, birds are searching for food in a rapidly drying pond[...]

Snow Force

In this scene, snow is falling during a winter storm.  As the snow falls it demonstrates kinetic energy and when it lands it has potential energy.  As snow accumulates on the objects in this scene, it applies a force on the objects.   The more snow that accumulates, the more force is applied[...]

Oh my, what happened here?

In this scene a chemical change has taken place  with the oxidation of the post on the awning  due to its exposure to the outside environment. The bricks have also undergone a chemical change because the oxidation from the awnings post has spread where the two meet.  In conclusion the chemical[...]

Water, Water?

Change of state is an example of CAUSE AND EFFECT.  When a change of state occurs (CAUSE) there is always something that happens because of it (EFFECT.)  Sheldon Lake Environmental Learning Center Pond 3S Jamie Spates[...]

What a web of life!!!

A teenager trying to catch fish.  Food web is directly linked to the concept of cause and effect.  Food webs will dictate which populations will increase or decrease in an ecosystem.  (i.e. If people decide to exterminate all the snakes in one area, then you will see an increase in the rodent pop[...]
